About Chris Burkard:

Chris Burkard is well known as a unique visionary whose photography has the ability to catapult the viewer into the moment. At 26 years old Chris has served as a freelance photographer for numerous national and international publications, and is currently serving as staff photographer for Surfer Magazine. Along with his editorial contributions, Chris has created a coffee table book "The California Surf Project", and continues to travel the world seeking to experience the most remote, rugged and untouched destinations that exist.

Overview:

Professional surf photographer Chris Burkard will lead a one-day workshop speaking on what he has learned in his career on water photography. Focusing on the water surface and wave photography this class will not require scuba or dive experience of any kind. *swimming experience helpful :)  Learn what equipment you need to shoot in the water, how to use water housings, what settings are ideal, where to position yourself while in the water, and many more tricks of the trade. You will have many technical questions answered as well as water photography theory, and how to use the camera as an extension of your body while swimming. This class will also teach you how to keep your camera and yourself safe while in the water. The class will be very hands on and Chris will provide demo water housings, but participants are encouraged to bring their own water housing if they have one. The class will be structured in two parts including half the day in class and the rest of the day using the housings in the ocean or pool depending on weather.

 
What you will learn:

-The mechanics and basic techniques of shooting water photography.

-Knowledge of how to use a water housing and what settings are best while shooting in the water.

-Understanding of all the equipment needed to shoot water shots.

-Insider tips on how to obtain quality water images and how to maintain water equipment.

-How to keep yourself safe in the surf zone

- How to approach a lineup and safely get in and out of the water with your camera

- Setup-breakdown- and maintenance of all equipment including wetsuit fins and of course yourself!

 
What you take home:


A better understanding of how to achieve quality water images and how to use water housings with your DSLR. Confidence in using your equipment in the water and tricks of the trade Chris has learned from shooting water photography all around the world. You will also take away greater confidence in using your camera in the surf zone, a better understanding of ocean lineups and how to navigate through them with your camera.


Requirements:

- DSLR Camera (proficient working knowledge of DSLR camera)
- Water Housing (a demo will available fitting a Canon 7D)
- Wetsuit and Swimsuit
- Experience and comfort swimming in pool and ocean

*bring swim fins if you own a pair, but not required

LUNCH: 12-1:30 pm

CLASS (Afternoon/Evening)
Where: Avila Beach or Pool
When: July 28th 1:30-5pm

• Meet at Beach or Pool (TBD on weather conditions)
• Bring out gear and explain how to set up water housing
• Put on wetsuits or swimsuits and get cameras into water
• Set up water housing with personal DSLR
• Spend time in water shooting images and getting feedback and tips from Chris
